Chapter 6

Wen Yu hesitated for several seconds; the phone kept ringing. She reluctantly answered, « Hello, big brother. » Her soft, feeble voice revealed a sense of guilt.

Through the phone, Jiang Yunyan seemed to see her slightly wrinkled brows. He didn’t waste time and asked, « Your broker just said you need money. What for? »

Over the phone, Jiang Yunyan’s voice seemed to carry a bit of electric current. Wen Yu’s ears tingled. She rubbed her ears, coughed lightly, and said, « I found a drama that I really like and want to invest in, but I don’t have enough money. »

« How much is the shortfall? » Jiang Yunyan inquired.

Wen Yu’s eyes brightened, her voice more crisp, « Five million. Big brother, would you…? »

Full of anticipation, it seemed like everything was about to overflow.

Jiang Yunyan, however, didn’t indulge her, « Send me the script to review. »

« Okay! » Wen Yu happily agreed, « Thank you, big brother! »

But Jiang Yunyan didn’t relent, « Don’t thank me too soon. If the script isn’t good, I won’t give you the money. »

Wen Yu didn’t mind, her mind full of ‘give’—it meant no need to repay! She was very diligent, « Sure, big brother, I trust your judgment! »

Unable to contain her excitement, Wen Yu quickly hung up the phone. »

« No wonder I haven’t encountered him once. As Wen Yu thought about Jiang Yunyan’s well-proportioned figure and that stern and steady CEO face, a hint of a smile appeared on her lips as she pictured him wearing an apron, bending over to clean the house. With this thought, she didn’t seem to fear Jiang Yunyan as much anymore.

Wen Yu cheerfully put down her luggage, went straight to her room, and, having brought most of her things after marriage, including the property certificate, she immediately asked her broker how to mortgage the property. The broker, startled, called her right away, asking if their boss was going bankrupt. She denied it, explaining her need for money. The broker offered to lend her some, and Wen Yu, softening her voice, requested five million, thanking her broker, Liusister.

Liusister, troubled by the call quality, asked to talk later. Wen Yu sighed, deciding to consult a lawyer about the property mortgage tomorrow. However, before she could do that, her phone rang, and Jiang Yunyan’s name appeared. Holding the phone, she trembled. ‘Liusister!!! How could you report to the headmaster?!’

Wen Yu didn’t mind, her mind full of ‘give’—it meant no need to repay! She was very diligent, « Sure, big brother, I trust your judgment! »

Unable to contain her excitement, Wen Yu quickly hung up the phone. »

Opening WeChat, Wan Yuxi planned to forward the script sent by Lu Yuzu. Suddenly, she realized something: did she just hang up on her sugar daddy’s call? Feeling guilty, after forwarding the script, she typed, « Big brother, no rush, if you’re busy, you can read it later, your work is more important. »

With a cute emoji, Jiang Yunyan replied, « Not busy. » He then received the file. Like waiting for exam results, Wan Yuxi anxiously awaited his response, despite knowing the script performed well in the story.

To calm her nerves, Wan Yuxi ordered takeout, took a shower, and when she came out, the food had arrived. Before she could eat, Jiang Yunyan called again, « The script is good, can invest. To lower the risk, the investment amount shouldn’t be too large. How much do you plan to invest? »

« Ten million, » Wan Yuxi explained, « Estimated total cost is around fifteen million, investing ten million for maximum influence. »

« Okay, » Jiang Yunyan said, « Tomorrow, I’ll have my assistant transfer ten million to you. »

« What? » Wan Yuxi was surprised, « Big… big brother, did you make a mistake? I’m only short of five million. »

Jiang Yunyan’s voice carried a hint of helplessness, « Keep that money for yourself. »

Wan Yuxi: « Oh. »

Jiang Yunyan was indeed generous. Wan Yuxi, teary-eyed, couldn’t help but thank her friend, « Really, thanks to Sister Liu. If she hadn’t reported, my life would be in turmoil. »

A seemingly amused chuckle came from the phone. A brief shock tingled her ears.

Then, Jiang Yunyan called out, « Little fish. »

« Hmm? » Wan Yuxi replied.

« That house, if I remember correctly, was a wedding gift from your parents. I need to sign for the mortgage. »

Wan Yuxi: « … »

(⊙皿⊙)

She forgot!

Mixed memories from two lives caused a lapse in her thoughts. Fortunately, Jiang Yunyan didn’t continue teasing her; he said he had something and hung up.

Checking the time, it was past nine in the evening, and Jiang Yunyan was still working.

Great.

They hadn’t signed a prenuptial agreement. With his hard work earning every million, wouldn’t she get half?

Wan Yuxi cleared her throat, feeling a bit ashamed of her selfish thoughts, then happily devoured her meal. Sweet and sour pork, delicious!

Ten million is really a lot!

This generous husband is really something!

Before marriage, Wan Yuxi remembered Jiang Yunyan only gave her a red envelope on her birthday and Chinese New Year. She never expected him to be so generous after marriage. She was starting to hesitate about divorce.

On the second day, Wen Yu slept until noon and received a notification that the money had been credited. She immediately sent a screenshot of the balance to Lu Yuzuo, who was excited and wished he could fly over instantly. However, he was still busy arranging actors on the film and television side.

The film crew was on a tight budget, unable to afford many famous actors. They relied on luck at the film and television city, often encountering affordable actors with decent looks and some acting skills. Wen Yu didn’t concern herself with these directorial matters.

The prospect of investing in a blockbuster drama put her in a good mood. She didn’t immediately return Jiang Yunjin’s five million yuan, deciding to wait and see. If the production still lacked funds, she could contribute later. Money wasn’t a problem for her, so she invited two friends, Yu Yi and Wei Ningning, to go out.

Both freelancers, one in design and the other in art, readily agreed to Wen Yu’s invitation. When they met at the agreed-upon mall, Yu Yi noticed Wen Yu alone and asked, « Where’s Zhao Qingyuan? Didn’t you come with her? »

Wen Yu shook her head, and before Yu Yi could ask more, Wei Ningning nudged her, prompting her to stay silent.

Respecting boundaries in their circle, they refrained from prying into each other’s affairs. Wei Ningning handed a cup of lemon tea to Wen Yu, saying, « I got you fruit tea, lemon flavor. »

« Thanks, » replied Wen Yu, sipping the tea as they strolled and chatted. Eventually, they found a coffee shop to rest, where both friends spontaneously asked Wen Yu about her recent activities.

« Just filming some dramas, » she casually replied.

« Is filming fun? » Both friends were curious.

Wen Yu pondered and said, « It’s entertaining if you have a thick skin. By the way, I recently invested in a small romantic drama. Are you interested? You can contribute some money and play a role together. »

Yu Yi and Wei Ningning exchanged surprised glances. Unable to contain herself, Yu Yi asked, « You’re still investing? Aren’t you afraid of losing money inside? »

Wei Ningning tactfully added, « Yeah, it’s not worth it for a guy. »

Amused, Wen Yu explained, « No, Jiang Yunjin would never film a small web drama. Plus, it’s not for him. The script is genuinely good, and you know how the entertainment industry works. I’m investing now, and once this drama gains some popularity, we’ll likely break even. The production costs are also not high. »

« How much is ‘not high’? » Yu Yi’s interest was piqued.

« I invested ten million yuan, the largest contributor, » Wen Yu shrugged.

« Ten million! » The two gasped, revealing envy on their faces as they casually tossed around ten million. Although they had money at home, their cash wasn’t as plentiful as it seemed.

Wen Yu quickly explained, « If you’re interested, you can try investing fifty or a hundred thousand to test the waters. » After some hesitation, the two nodded, considering fifty thousand a manageable amount.

For them, fifty thousand was just a month’s worth of pocket money if they tightened their belts a bit. Trying their luck seemed reasonable.

Wen Yu, pleased with their response, was about to inform Lu Yuzhu of attracting some small investors when a voice behind her interrupted, « Xiao Yu, I really envy you, casually throwing out ten million. By the way, I watched the movie you invested in last year; they said it made a lot of money. I saw it recently; did you check the box office? How much did it make? »

The three paused, turned to see a gently smiling girl sitting behind them, partially hidden by a potted plant. They hadn’t noticed her until she spoke.

« Zhao Qingyuan? » Yu Yi frowned. « When did you arrive? »

Zhao Qingyuan’s smile softened, « Just a while ago. I overheard Xiao Yu talking about investments, not intentionally eavesdropping, just happened to recall this matter. »

She looked at Wen Yu, « Xiao Yu, how’s the performance of the movie you invested in? »

She wore a smile, but her eyes gleamed with a cold light. Her words drew the attention of Yu Yuzhi and Wei Ningning, shaking their recently firm resolve.

This was the plastic best friend who called her during the affair expose.

Wen Yu didn’t know if Zhao Qingyuan had always been like this, but she felt that this person truly deserved the title of the novel’s other major villainess.

In the book, Wen Yu’s character mainly irritated people, causing disruptions in the relationship between the male and female leads but wasn’t malicious. However, Zhao Qingyuan was different.

She appeared gentle but suggested Wen Yu to seduce and frame Su Lengyue through Su Lengyue’s live broadcast, ruining their relationship. Ironically, she also had feelings for Jiang Yunjin.

While liking him, she envied Wen Yu, who, despite being an orphan and living under others’ care, fared better than the pampered young ladies.

Her parents treated her as a commodity, not as a daughter. So, besides sabotaging Jiang Yunjin and Su Lengyue’s relationship, she also managed to harm Wen Yu. Unfortunately, the unwavering bond between the main couple resisted her multiple attempts, even when she resorted to extreme measures.

Of course, her fate was worse than Wen Yu’s after awakening. Wen Yu promptly cut ties with Zhao Qingyuan and moved on, thinking their plastic friendship should have an unspoken rule of not targeting each other. However, Zhao Qingyuan set her sights on Wen Yu.

Wen Yu thought, truly living up to the novel’s malicious supporting female character, she didn’t spare even a cannon fodder like me. She calmly replied, « Not great, in the red. I don’t know how much we can recover. »

Zhao Qingyuan immediately covered her mouth, apologetic, « Ah? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. But, considering you invested quite a bit, around ten million, it must be heartbreaking to be in the red. »

Yu Yuzhi’s face changed slightly as she looked at Wei Ningning.

Wei Ningning frowned, then smiled, « Investments are like that, you win some, you lose some. It’s just that this amount is indeed a bit heart-wrenching. »

Yu Yuzhi, at these words, also regained her composure, laughing, « True, we can afford to lose this fifty thousand. »

Wen Yu was speechless. They had prepared for the two to give up, but unexpectedly, they insisted.

Zhao Qingyuan’s expression also changed, seeming to realize their situations were different. She admired, « Your families are still better off, not caring about this casual fifty thousand. »

The conversation went as if they were insisting on compensation. Wen Yu followed suit, covering her mouth, and said with a sense of grievance, « Sister Zhao, you make it sound like I must lose money. I was new to the industry when I got deceived. I learned my lesson after a few losses. This time, I specifically asked my husband, and only invested when he approved. Your words make me really uncomfortable. »

Yi Sheng’s voice suddenly rose, « Asked who? »

« Your husband? » Wei Ningning exclaimed.

They locked eyes and said in unison, « Jiang Yunyan?? »

Wen Yu blinked, « Yes. »

Zhao Qingyuan was also shocked, « Is it really Jiang Yunyan? How could he… »

Before Wen Yu could refute, Yi Sheng, annoyed, interjected, « Why not? Jiang CEO is now Little Fish’s husband. They’re married. Would he let his wife lose money? Little Fish, agreed, I’ll invest one million! »

« Joint marital property, the loss is also his! » Wei Ningning added, « Little Fish, I’ll also invest one million! »

Wen Yu covered her lips, smiling mischievously.

Zhao Qingyuan’s smile froze, looking at the three confidently pooling their resources. She tightly pinched her palm, the pain bringing back her rationality. Without changing her expression, she smiled, « Oh, I see. It’s unlikely to incur losses then. Little Fish, my apologies for the misunderstanding. As a gesture of goodwill, I’ll also invest one million to support you. »

Wei Ningning & Yi Sheng: « … »

Wen Yu: …(`皿´), Strong or malicious supporting characters are indeed formidable!

But having Jiang Yunyan’s name is quite handy, isn’t it?
