Summary

Lu Wanzhou transmigrated in one morning and became a destitute young man whose parents had both passed away, living under someone else's roof. His uncle and aunt eyed him with greed, coveting the last remaining house and fields he had, and even wanted to take his life. With nowhere left to turn, he could only tear off all pretense of civility and insist on splitting the family household.
After the split, he was utterly penniless, the rice jar was empty, and beside him there was only a simple-minded, silly little ger named Yu Mian. Lu Wanzhou, who had no strength to truss a chicken, could only rack his brains to make money and scrape by.
The villagers all watched coldly from the sidelines, waiting to see him poor and wretched, at the end of his rope and a laughingstock. But who would have thought that Lu Wanzhou would directly turn things around with his superb cooking skills:
Silky, flavorful spicy douhua, five coppers a bowl, drew even the county magistrate to send people scrambling to buy it;
The bracken roots that grew all over the hills and that no one paid any attention to, he ground into fine bracken starch, and the major restaurants in town all fought to place advance orders.
Life grew more prosperous day by day, and he earned copper coins until his pockets were full. He bought an ox cart and then set up a spacious residence in town. Lu Wanzhou devoted himself to diligent study and advanced triumphantly all the way—tongsheng, xiucai, juren, rising step by step, and ultimately his name appeared on the golden roll.
He held the once-skinny Yu Mian in the palm of his hand, tending to him with care, raising him to be fair and delicate, soft and charming, with refined brows and eyes, in no way inferior to the pampered little ger of the city. In the blink of an eye, Yu Mian became a sought-after prize that everyone had their eye on.
Lu Wanzhou watched him tightly, terrified that his little treasure would be snatched away, but instead it stirred up a rebellious streak in Yu Mian, who in a fit of pique secretly ran off.
Lu Wanzhou was both angry and amused, and personally went out to catch the little runaway dumpling and bring him back.
Yu Mian knew he was in the wrong, and nestled in the carriage, the corners of his eyes reddened, rubbing stickily against him: "Brother, don't be angry. This time it was my fault. Next time I'll definitely run farther."
Lu Wanzhou had originally planned to wait until the little one grew a bit more and then protect him properly for a lifetime, but Yu Mian was completely unaware of the danger, chattering away every day, making a fuss about getting married and leaving home.
For all his precautions, in the end he still could not hold back the feelings in his heart. Looking at the flushed cheeks and slender waist of the person in his arms, Lu Wanzhou could no longer restrain himself, and firmly circled the person into his embrace, teasing and bullying him to his heart's content.
The next day, Yu Mian's whole body was sore and weak, and with red-rimmed eyes he accused him of coercion.
Lu Wanzhou gave a low laugh, held the soft, glutinous little dumpling tightly in his arms, and coaxed him gently: "If it was coercion, then I'll prepare white jade hairpins, pearl chains, and a full chest of betrothal gifts. If Mianmian won't accept them, they can only pile up in the storeroom gathering dust."
Yu Mian's wailing and howling came to an abrupt halt, and he looked up in a daze: "Betrothal gifts... all for me?"
"Who else? Still saying I coerced you?"
Yu Mian's body instantly went soft, and he hugged his waist, rubbing back and forth, softly acting spoiled: "I already adored brother to begin with. Brother was just exercising his rights ahead of time."
Later, Lu Wanzhou placed first in the imperial examination, his bearing cold and elegant, peerlessly distinguished, with the delicate and lovely Yu Mian at his side. The villagers gossiped behind his back, cursing him as a top scholar who turned heartless the moment his name was on the golden roll.
But no one saw that the top scholar, who was cold, self-possessed, and never smiled outside, would turn around and, holding a big gold bracelet, patiently coax the little treasure in his arms.
"Baobao, do you like this one?"
The charming little beauty's round eyes sparkled brightly. "Mm!"
The villagers: "Tui, one heartless man and one little fox spirit!"
The single-minded Lord Lu and the obedient little Yu Mian??? Who are you talking about?
