Chapter 23 Classmate, You Have Quite the Official Authority

“Could everyone please stay for a moment? We’re going to select the class officers.”

At the last class of the afternoon, just after it ended, the counselor Hu Zhifang called out to those about to leave and asked them to sit down.

Hu Zhifang was not very tall, but she looked like a very shrewd woman.

Zhou Yuntao sat in the front row, sitting up straight. He was determined to become the class monitor.

Becoming a class officer is the first step to joining the student council. Positions in the university student council are a valuable stepping stone for entering society later on.

“This time, the election for class officers will be by anonymous voting. Everyone is part of the class, so actively signing up means everyone has a chance,” Hu Zhifang said with a smile as she stood on the podium addressing the crowd.

Sitting in the last row, Xu Yuan had just woken up and couldn’t help but yawn.

“Yuan’er, why don’t you run for something too? If you can’t be class president, there are other positions, right? The guys all support you,” Zhang Long whispered to Xu Yuan.

Xu Yuan was now the boss of the dorm. The three of them in the dorm were the only three VIPs with an 80% discount card at the convenience store.

“Trust me, it’s better to please the boss than to please your colleagues,” Xu Yuan said meaningfully, then yawned again and lay back down.

As Xu Yuan had expected, Zhou Yuntao was determined to secure the position of class monitor, so he only participated in the election for class monitor.

Other class positions were all taken by those with the highest votes. But when it came to the class president, Zhou Yuntao originally felt confident of his victory because his votes were far ahead, yet when Hu Zhifang finally announced the name, it wasn’t him.

« Class monitor will be held by classmate Zheng Jian, everyone applaud. »

As Hu Zhifang finished speaking, this kind of person was still a bit stunned. Zhou Yuntao even stood up excitedly, unable to utter a single word.

A sharp-faced boy in the back row quickly walked up the steps and flatteringly said to Hu Zhifang, « Thank you for the teacher’s recognition. I will definitely do my best to serve everyone in the future. »

« Classmates, let me, as the class monitor, treat everyone to a weekend dinner. It’s my small way of contributing to the class, » Zheng Jian first thanked Hu Zhifang, then turned to address the whole class.

The students, who had been a bit confused before, suddenly became excited upon hearing this. Just now, they had felt sorry for Zhou Yuntao and thought it was unfair voting, but since they weren’t that close anyway, and this unexpected class monitor was so generous—and appointed by Hu Zhifang—no one had anything more to say.

Everyone applauded enthusiastically, except Zhou Yuntao, who sat down dejectedly with a slightly awkward smile on his face. His roommate beside him could only quietly comfort him.

Since no one has any objections, Zheng Jian, you do a good job. I have some matters to attend to, so I’ll leave first. Organize the class, and if there’s nothing else, let’s dismiss early.

Hu Zhifang nodded with satisfaction, then took her bag and left the classroom first.

« Dear classmates, I am very honored to serve as the class monitor.

I hope our class can become a harmonious big family. »

Zheng Jian’s demeanor completely changed at this moment, starkly different from when Hu Zhifang was here earlier. Standing on the podium, he looked down on everyone as if from above.

The crowd didn’t have much of a reaction to this scene, only clapping a few times in a scattered manner.

However, everyone was a bit confused about what Zheng Jian was about to say next.

Our weekend gathering this time must be well organized. Of course, it can’t just be this one time; I will organize more events in the future.

So I also hope that all classmates can give some support and back me up in my work as class monitor.

At this moment, Xu Yuan finally raised his head; he felt like he was about to get a piece of the pie.

I want to raise some class funds. 300 from the girls, 500 from the boys, to be used as our class activity fund in the future. What does everyone think?

As soon as he finished speaking, many people raised their eyebrows, and a few boys even wanted to jump up immediately.

« Class monitor, this isn’t appropriate, is it? There are more than 30 people in our class, and together it adds up to over ten thousand, » Zhou Yuntao raised his hand and said.

Zheng Jian had just become the class monitor and immediately wanted to collect class fees. So, when he said earlier that he wanted to treat everyone to a weekend dinner, would the money come from the class fund or his own pocket? Who knows?

« Exactly, class monitor. If you collected fifty or a hundred, we definitely wouldn’t mind, but that’s about all the monthly living expenses we have, » besides Zhou Yuntao, a girl also stood up to express her opinion.

« Tch, really thought we got a rich class monitor. Turns out he just wants to treat us like fools, » Li Rui sneered disdainfully.

Li Rui’s voice was not soft at all; Zheng Jian heard it clearly and immediately frowned.

That student in the back row, do you have a question?

Li Rui also had a hot temper. Hearing his name called, he immediately stood up.

Standing nearly 1.9 meters tall, with a muscular build, he looked like a small tower, full of imposing presence.

« Class monitor, let’s not even talk about why boys have to pay more than girls.

Anyway, I’ve never heard of the class fund needing to raise over ten thousand at once.

If that’s the total amount for all four years of college, I have no objections. But if there’s a first and a second, can there be a third?

And can you guarantee there will be several class activities each month? »

Li Rui’s words made a lot of sense, and many people agreed in response.

« We’re just students; meeting once a month occasionally should be enough. We really don’t need that much money, right? » Zhou Yuntao followed up on Li Rui’s point.

Hearing so many objections, Zheng Jian became a bit anxious and repeatedly waved his hands to explain:

Classmates, that’s not how it is. During Teacher’s Day, we were in military training and didn’t give the teachers any flowers or gifts.

I was thinking we could all chip in some class funds to make up for the gift.

In the future, for any holidays, I will also set aside some money from the class funds to give the teachers some gifts.”

As soon as these words were spoken, the whole room fell silent. Zheng Jian’s statement was not wrong, but it was also very problematic!

« Damn! Are you sick or am I sick? You suck up to the teacher, what does that have to do with us? If I didn’t ask, you wouldn’t have said anything, right?

Good grief, using class funds to curry favor with the teacher, you’re the first one to do that. The key is, you shamelessly act like it’s a perfectly reasonable excuse. »

Li Rui has a bad temper; others don’t dare to speak up, but he does.

Zheng Jian really lives up to his name—he’s truly despicable.

Zheng Jian’s face darkened. He used to handle things this way back in high school—just bring the teacher into it, and no one dared to oppose. Why doesn’t this trick work in college?

« Let’s go, don’t stoop to the level of a fool. » Xu Yuan was afraid that Li Rui might get so agitated that he would beat up Zheng Jian.

Zhang Long and Qian Jialun saw Xu Yuan about to leave, so they hurriedly pulled Li Rui along as well.

« I am the class monitor, and I haven’t said you can leave yet! » Zheng Jian was angry. He didn’t believe that just because he held the position of class monitor, he couldn’t intimidate the others.

Xu Yuan glanced at him and said, « With that attitude of yours, someone who didn’t know might think you’re the principal.

Classmate, you sure have a lot of official authority! »

Someone stood out as the first to act, and the others quickly packed up their things, preparing to leave.

Zheng Jian was a bit stunned; this was not what he had originally expected. The tactic of « borrowing flowers to offer to the Buddha, » which was his specialty, surprisingly didn’t work.

……

“Brother Rui, you were really fierce just now. I saw quite a few girls looking at you with stars in their eyes,” Zhang Long genuinely admired Li Rui’s boldness.

Zheng Jian was, after all, a class monitor. If he spoke ill of Hu Zhifang or deliberately slandered her, that would really be hard to deal with.

The counselor at the university actually had quite a lot of authority.

« Damn, Zhou Yuntao is pretty fierce too, he just kicked Zheng Jian out of the group chat directly. » Qian Jialun watched the messages popping out of the group one after another and took a deep breath.

[Classmates, let’s split the bill for the weekend gathering.]

..

I guess this guy was like this in high school too, thinking this approach would work in college. What an idiot, really acting like the class monitor is some kind of official.

Li Rui was getting more and more annoyed the more he thought about it. If Xu Yuan and the others hadn’t pulled him away, he would have easily rushed over to give Zheng Jian a good beating.

Jialun, isn’t your uncle the director of the Academic Affairs Office? I think this matter needs to be dealt with. After all, this class monitor is unfit for the position and wasn’t even elected by vote.

His behavior just now, to put it nicely, was collecting class funds; to put it more seriously, it counts as illegal fundraising.

If Zheng Jian continues to be the class monitor, our class probably won’t have any peace. » Although Xu Yuan didn’t mind offending Zheng Jian, being a thief only at night is one thing, but having to guard against thieves every day doesn’t make sense.

After all, Zheng Jian is still a class monitor. If he’s up to some small tricks, even if it doesn’t hurt, it must at least itch.

« Isn’t that a problem? We don’t have any concrete evidence. » Qian Jialun didn’t want to trouble Song Qiming too much; after all, it was just a trivial matter.

« Who says we don’t? The whole class is a witness! And I have a recording. » Xu Yuan shook his phone and said with a smile.

As soon as he felt he was about to get a big break, he quietly turned on the phone recorder.

“It has to be you, Yuan’er!” Li Rui said excitedly, hugging Xu Yuan’s neck.

Qian Jialun thought for a moment, then nodded and said, “Alright, I’ll give it a try.”

……

……

Yuan’er, are you really not going?

Li Rui and the others, who had carefully tidied up earlier, were now packing their things. They were preparing to go for a picnic in the suburbs, having heard there was a bonfire camp there where they could stay overnight.

« I’m not going, I have something to do today, didn’t I say that earlier? » Xu Yuan waved his hand.

Zhang Chao just sent him an address, and he’s about to rush over now.

« Hehe… Rui, you’re dressed so handsome, do you have something in mind? Don’t you have a girlfriend? » Zhang Long looked at Li Rui mischievously.

This guy has applied hair gel three times on his head; even a level ten typhoon probably couldn’t blow it away.

“Bro, this is called sharing handsome guy resources. Besides, I’m not thinking of anything else!” Li Rui said stubbornly.

“Huh? Why was Zheng Jian added to the group again? Is he going today too?” Qian Jialun glanced at the messages in the group and couldn’t help but frown.

After he handed Xu Yuan’s recording to Song Qiming that day, the latter quickly took action. Zheng Jian was removed after serving as class monitor for only a day and a half, and Zhou Yuntao took over in the end.

Qian Jialun always felt a bit worried about this, afraid of getting into trouble. His personality was somewhat timid.

« Go ahead then, but this guy really has some nerve. The class monitor is gone, and the counselor has assigned him as the life monitor again.

I guess Zhou Yuntao didn’t want to offend the counselor, so he pulled him back in, » Zhang Long analyzed.

Don’t talk about such unlucky stuff, let’s go quickly, or we’ll miss the bus later.
