Chapter 69: Let’s Hear It
Midway through the meal, Chen Ciyi’s phone rang. He pulled it out from his jeans pocket, and his expression changed slightly when he saw the caller ID. Then he said to them, “I need to step out to take this call.”
Xu Yannuo didn’t intentionally look at his screen, but when it lit up, her peripheral vision inadvertently caught the caller’s name: Mom.
Chen Ci’s expression clearly darkened when he answered the phone, but it didn’t seem like something worrisome had happened at home. So why would he make such a face when receiving his mother’s call?
Xu Yannuo took a sip of coffee, feeling puzzled. Just as Chen Ci stepped out, Zhang Zhao across from her turned to her with great interest and asked, “So, you’re the little white rabbit from QQ?”
Xu Yannuo was taken aback by the question. QQ? She then remembered her QQ profile picture—it was indeed a little bunny. She hadn’t set it herself; it was the default avatar when she registered for the account, and she’d just kept it ever since out of laziness.
She nodded, “Yes.”
Zhang Zhao was about to continue gossiping, eager to ask how she managed to win over Chen Ciyi—it was simply amazing. Their “top brother” had always been a certain way around girls: if the other person stayed silent, he’d just maintain his cold, aloof demeanor, like a walking air conditioner. But if any girl tried to be lively and cute, chattering nonstop in front of him to grab his attention, he would outright walk away without hesitation. Forget about him initiating conversation, smiling, or even walking side by side with someone—let alone actively helping her carry coffee and food like he just did!
His eyes nearly popped out of his head in shock, but he didn’t dare say a word.
But before he could open his mouth, Wang Sinan cut in first.
Wang Sinan recalled what he’d recently heard from classmates—that a few nights ago, someone had spotted Chen Ciyi with a girl at Liu’s BBQ joint. “So, you two went to Liu’s BBQ the other day?”
Xu Yannuo immediately recalled the stir-fried instant noodles and the sizzling, fragrant skewers from that skewer shop. She nodded, “Their food is really good, but it’s just a bit far from No. 8 High School.”
“Holy shit, it really is you two. I thought No. 2 High School was too peaceful without the top dog. Who the hell had nothing better to do than spread rumors?” Wang Sinan wasn’t actually talking about the skewer shop’s flavors. He glanced out the window at Chen Ciyi, then leaned forward with his arms on the table, “Heard you ran into that idiot Xu Hang?”
Who is Xu Hang?
Though she didn’t know him, Xu Yannuo immediately remembered the three troublemakers who had come to pick a fight that day—clearly students from No. 2 High School. “Yeah, three guys came to start something, but they ran off after just a few hits,” Xu Yannuo described it casually. Though for those all-bark-no-bite types, the process wasn’t entirely as light as she made it sound.
Wang Sinan slapped his thigh, “I really ran into him, it’s a small world. That idiot!” He sighed and then looked at Xu Yannuo, raising an eyebrow with keen interest, “Tell me the details!” Especially how the two of you tortured him.
“We didn’t really do much torturing, they ran off inexplicably…” Xu Yannuo recounted the events of that day and couldn’t help but ask curiously, “Did they have some serious grudge before?”
Wang Sinan slapped his thigh and exclaimed, “It’s a huge story—it all started back in their middle school days.”
Xu Yannuo was prepared to listen attentively to the story, looking at Wang Sinan with great interest. “Let’s hear it,” he said.
